Journal Publication Guidelines and Call for Papers
INTRODUCTION
The Al-Karkari Institute for Sufi Studies is pleased to announce the launch of its interdisciplinary journal, Nūr, dedicated to fostering rigorous academic engagement with Islamic spirituality and mysticism, broadly considered. This journal will serve as an open-access platform for scholars, researchers, and practitioners from diverse backgrounds to explore and contribute to the rich field of Sufi studies. We aim to publish high-quality research that adheres to academic standards while remaining accessible to a wide audience, including both academics and informed readers.
Editorial Vision
Our journal aims to be an inclusive platform that embraces diverse perspectives and fosters scholarly dialogue on Sufism. We are committed to broadening the discourse on Islamic mysticism by welcoming contributions from both scholars and practitioners. Operating on a continuous publishing model, we will ensure timely release of accepted articles, with an annual issue compiling the year's contributions. Furthermore, we plan to host an annual conference to showcase and discuss the published works.
Scope and Content
The journal will publish a wide range of scholarly content, including:
Academic Research Articles
Original research focusing on Sufi studies, Islamic mysticism, and related fields, with interdisciplinary approaches encouraged.
Translations
Scholarly translations of Sufi texts, accompanied by commentary to contextualize the work.
Book/Film Reviews
Critical reviews of recent publications and films relevant to Islamic mysticism, aiming to provide insightful perspectives for readers.
Academic Essays
Thought-provoking essays that provide new insights into Islamic spirituality, Sufism, and related theological issues.
Constructive Theology
Explorations of theological ideas within the framework of Sufi teachings, as well as writings rooted in traditional Islamic scholarship.
Publishing and Review Policies
The journal will accept submissions in English, French, and Arabic, ensuring accessibility for a global audience. We encourage authors to maintain clarity and academic rigor in their writing, while also conveying the depth and nuance of Sufi thought.
Open Submission Policy
We invite submissions from all scholars and researchers interested in Sufi studies, regardless of institutional affiliation.
Peer Review
While peer review is optional, we encourage it for authors seeking constructive feedback and engagement with their work. Submissions that undergo peer review will be marked accordingly
Publication Schedule:
The journal follows a continuous publishing model, releasing accepted works as soon as they are ready. An compiled issue will be published annually and available for distribution as a hardcopy.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Length
Submissions should not exceed 9,000 words (including main text and notes)
Transliteration
Arabic, Persian, and Turkish transliteration should conform to the IJMES transliteration system.
Citation Guidelines:
The journal follows Chicago Manual of Style guidelines for citations. Authors are expected to use the Notes and Bibliography system.
Authors should submit a biographical note of no more than 60 words.
Call for Papers
We invite submissions of academic papers, essays, translations, and reviews that address topics related to Sufi studies, including but not limited to:
Theoretical frameworks of Islamic mysticism
Historical and contemporary Sufi movements
Sufi theology and metaphysics
Sufi poetry, literature, and artistic expressions
Interdisciplinary approaches to Sufi studies (including intersections with psychology, philosophy, anthropology, and more)
North African Sufi traditions and their global significance
HOW TO SUBMIT
Submissions are accepted year-round. Authors interested in contributing to the journal are invited to submit their work via email to nur@karkari.org. Please include an abstract of no more than 300 words, a brief biography, and contact information.
