THE REALITY OF LOVE
The Speech of Pronouns
This poem is an English translation of an Arabic poem by Mohamed Jedoui, featured in his book Etiquette of Spiritual Companionship.
Do not say “I love”, for love cannot originate from you,
You are death, darkness, evil, heedlessness, and wrath too.
Love originates from the Beloved, who first loved you,
And revived His breath deep within you.
As for you, you are unworthy of love!
Say instead, “I am the hateful, I am the hypocrite, I am the fool.”
Say it first until you taste it. That is the rule.
Due to the intensity of your transgression, you cannot see,
But if you do, know that it was not seen by thee.
Because seeing it is praiseworthy, and the praiseworthy is from Allah.
So say it, perhaps the Beloved will reveal it without flaw.
Indeed, things are revealed through their opposites,
And so is love.
Yet strive as you might, you will never grasp it wholly,
For its essence is known by the Beloved alone, fully.
