GNOSIS
Phases of the Divine Ascent
You claim knowledge of the spirit, yet no— * all that you’ve spoken is ignorance on show.
You’ve not erased existence from sight, * nor folded the heavens in a single flight.
The miʿrāj was not granted to you in truth, * nor have you seen Allah’s light forsooth.
Learn, O companion, the path’s true way; * in the Karkarī you’ll vanish one day.
These are its roots, a saving grace— * gentle breezes to those who embrace.
A pledge begins the journey’s start— * to the Karkarī seal, O friend, take heart.
He casts in your heart a light so pure, * gathering with it attributes that endure.
The wird brings forth a grace that’s true, * uniting the self in a bond anew.
It leaves within your heart a fire * for Allah’s presence and true desire.
A wine of presence, pure and sweet, * tasting The Living with joy replete.
You chant the encapsulator of attributes dear, * and signs of light begin to appear.
In khulwa, you gather the worlds unseen— * an aid in knowledge, clear and keen.
You encompass the heavens in a single span, * with the Throne and Footstool in your hand.
You make it one sphere, a boundless ring, * beholding the Essence, the Eternal King.
You realize that existence subsist through His might, * His secret maintains it in form and sight.
Without union or indwelling, it holds no sway, * for those who claim it are led astray.
Then you wander in this kingdom wide, * with a secret profound, O heart open-eyed.
You walk among creatures, visible and bright, * with Allah’s secrets flowing in light.
You mingle with people, in body the same, * while the heart is lost in the blissful aim.
You wear a tattered cloak’s disguise * humbling your lofty soul so wise.
Through it, you learn the humility of love, * until only the Divine gaze is above.
A subḥa hangs around your neck, * a sign of union and multiplicity’s trek.
By Allah, it is a beautiful reminder, * and a companion in times ever kinder.
It encompasses all attributes in unity, * as well as the names and the essence’s affinity.
Then you wander with the Supreme Name, * remembering it, O faqīr, without shame.
It stirs in your heart, makes limbs quake, * and causes the chest and soul to shake.
Its letters, a symbol of secrets rare, * a door to knowing the Almighty there.
It opens the path of ascent so high, * till you are saved in knowledge’s sky.
By Allah, I ask, O denier blind, * who in this age is of al-Karkarī kind?
He leads you in the words of the Divine, * to understand the Prophet’s signs.
Then you will be a true wayfarer right, * a sincere murīd in the path of light.
Don’t heed the critics’ bitter pill * for their words are poison to the will.
The guide is tasting’s authority, * not empty talk of insanity.
O Lord, have mercy on my state, * and the end that awaits at fate’s gate.
Look upon me with a gentle grace, * in every moment and in every place.
Draw me close, and among Your beloveds place, * and grant me the acceptance of all Your saints.
And grant me favor in the seal’s heart * my master Faouzi, to him my verse imparts.
Upon him, O Lord, I’d sacrifice my years— * son of the Batūl is the Karkarī dear.
And grant me connection in ṣalāt * upon Muḥammad, the one of bounteous acts.
Bless him, O Lord, at every turn, * in every motion and stillness return.
A blessing that renders my heart effaced * in his presence, O Lord, fully embraced.
And praise be to Allah in the end, * praise befitting You, O Gracious Friend.
